Design and Technology days Y3

Home » News » Design and Technology days Y3

This week, Year 3 have been busy with Design and Technology. We spent the first two days of the week working collaboratively and learning new skills, and together we constructed 10 Native American Indian homes.

They included: a plank house, a chickee, a reed house, a wigwam and a tepee. Some of the homes were intended to be temporary shelters, used by tribes as they travelled with their cattle. Others were permanent homes and needed to be stronger. Can you remember which homes were used by which tribes? Which were permanent homes and which were temporary?

We learnt how to saw safely, use a glue gun and how to strengthen our structure at the corners. We used a range of materials; some were to build the main body of the building, others were to add extra design features such as roofing, a fire or a drying frame. We discussed our ideas using the correct language and we problem solved and persevered.

Once our models were completed, we shared our work with the rest of the class and Miss Lake and Mrs Van Russelt word banked our vocabulary so that we could use the correct spellings when we wrote our evaluations. That was the next job. We had to write about our successes, the challenges we faced, and how we might improve our designs.

All of our work will be in study work books and this week's photos show us busy with our work, and the finished homes!

We have loved our design and technology project and are very proud of our models! What a great week of design, practical work and evaluation!

Have a lovely weekend everyone. Don't forget it is Town Sports and School Sports next week...weather permitting.
