Year 1 news

Home » News » Year 1

We have been up to lots of exciting things over the last couple of weeks in year 1. In numeracy, we have been collecting data and starting to use and build about pictograms and think about what information they give us. We made a class pictogram asking the question "When is your birthday?" and we collected information from outside to find out "what is on our playground?" The children have been asking their own questions and collecting data from the classroom and even taking their learning out on to the playground at break times to find out information about the whole school!

In the afternoons, we have been continuing to learn about the weather. We have been weather reporting every day and we conducted a science experiment after the children decided they wanted to find out 'how clouds work'. We used shaving foam sitting on water in a jar and slowly added drops of coloured water with a pipette to the shaving foam. Ask your child what happened next! We have been writing instructions this week for the experiment too so this might help the children if they want to repeat the experiment at home.

We have continued to use our non fiction books to extend our knowledge about birds and nature watch. We have made our own question and answer non fiction pop up book which the children are very proud of. When Mrs Casserley popped in, she was impressed with all that the children knew about birds! We have even made some birds out of natural objects this week and then found a new fact about the bird we made.

Have a lovely half term and I will see you back in school on Tuesday 3rd June.
