Number and art fun in year 1

Home » News » Number and art fun in year 1

This week in year 1, we have had lots of fun getting to know 'Numicon' through play and activities. We have only been using it for two days and we have already found lots of ways in which it can help us with our number work. We used the Numicon pieces to fill the hundred boards, using only odd or even numbers, not using the number two or ten and other challenges! We then used the pieces today to help us to find out which numbers are odd and which are even, some of us even managed up to 100! In literacy, we have been 'showing off' our handwriting for our Study Work books, completing a fact file about St Luke's Hospice and a recount from the day St Luke's and the bus visited our school. In the afternoons, we have been putting together our own portraits using photographs and an ICT programme to create four portraits in the style of Andy Warhol. Other Andy Warhol inspired art this week have been designing Campbell's Tomato Soup labels in bright colours and choosing bright colours to complete art work on our 'No Paintbrushes Allowed' table, where children chose potato mashers, sponges, spoons, glue spreaders, and even a doll's wellington boot to create pictures. We have also enjoyed using our listening station, reading books and listening to them at the same time!
