Nature detectives with Year 1

Home » News » Nature detectives with Year 1

What an exciting week we have had so far in year 1!

At the beginning of the week, we designed and iced 'sea' biscuits just like the ones that Mrs Grinling makes for Mr Grinling in 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' story. The designs were fantastic and the biscuits looked and tasted great! We wrote a set of instructions for our biscuits, thinking of a title and concentrating on using time and 'bossy' words too. We then had our first look at this term's artist 'Andy Goldsworthy' and his sculptures made with nature. We used the items we had found on our nature hunt to make sculptures of our own and thought of titles for the pictures too. These were displayed outside on Wednesday morning so hopefully you got a chance to see them. On Wednesday and Thursday, we used the year 1 pond area to go pond dipping and found lots of amazing pond life including water boatman, pond skaters, tadpoles and a mayfly. The children have been 'researchers' using the non fiction books we have in the classroom to identify the different pond life found in our pond. We have even made our own ponds using different materials and techniques.
